The PM E-DRIVE incentive for electric two-wheelers ended on 31 July 2026, so scooters bought from 1 August no longer get up to ₹5,000 off from the centre. Many comparisons still include it and overstate the case for electric. This one does not — the central line is ₹0; only your state’s subsidy and road-tax position still apply.

Battery replacement

Most electric scooter batteries carry a 3-year or 3-year/30,000 km warranty and are expected to last 6–8 years. If yours needs replacing inside your ownership period, budget roughly ₹25,000–45,000 — this figure is not included above.

Break-even is the only number that matters

Cost-per-km ratios look spectacular, but you pay a lump sum upfront and recover it slowly. The decision is how long recovery takes — and whether you still own the scooter by then. Same vehicle, same fuel prices, but different daily distance or state subsidy can mean very different answers.

Where the saving actually comes from

Fuel is the obvious part. We also include about 12% charging loss and servicing: petrol ~₹3,500/year vs EV ~₹1,200/year. Over five years that service gap alone is worth about ₹11,000.

When petrol is still the right answer

  • Low mileage. Under ~15 km/day the annual saving may not repay the premium quickly.
  • No home charging. The case rests on overnight domestic rates.
  • Short ownership. Selling before break-even can favour petrol.
  • A lapsed-policy state. Full price with no road-tax relief pushes break-even out.

The battery question, answered honestly

Replacement packs cost roughly ₹25,000–45,000. We leave that out of the totals so you can judge the risk. Over five years most owners never pay it; over ten, assume one replacement — and daily-rider savings often still absorb it.

Frequently asked questions

For most daily riders, yes — but the maths got tighter. The central PM E-DRIVE incentive for two-wheelers closed on 31 July 2026, removing up to ₹5,000 from the effective price. At ~35 km/day in a state with a decent subsidy, break-even against a ₹90,000 petrol scooter is often under a year because running costs repay the premium quickly. In a lapsed-policy state it can take closer to 1.5–2 years.

At 35 km/day (~12,800 km/year), a typical electric scooter costs about ₹5,000/year to run including servicing, against roughly ₹30,000 for a 50 km/l petrol scooter at ₹105/litre — around ₹25,000 saved a year. The gap widens the more you ride and shrinks if you ride very little.

Below roughly 15 km/day the case weakens. At 10 km/day the annual saving may be under ₹10,000, so a large upfront premium takes years to repay. If you ride only at weekends, petrol is often the more sensible financial choice.

Substantially. State subsidies and road-tax waivers can swing ~₹20,000–30,000 on a typical scooter — enough to nearly double break-even time. Uttar Pradesh has lapsed entirely; Gujarat discontinued its purchase subsidy in 2024.

You can, but it rarely changes the verdict. Premiums are broadly similar for comparable scooters; any gap is usually a few hundred rupees a year against tens of thousands in fuel savings.

For two-wheelers, far less than for cars. Almost all owners charge overnight from a domestic socket. Adjust the electricity rate to your bill’s top slab for accuracy.
